Choosing a honeymoon destination is mostly a question of season. The same resort that is perfect in February can be humid, wet, or squarely inside hurricane season in September, and a wedding date you cannot move decides more about where you should go than any brochure does. This page works through destination and timing for Canadian couples, so the trip matches the month you are actually free to travel.
The Caribbean, Mexico and Central America have an Atlantic hurricane season running roughly June through November, most active from August into October. Trips in that window are usually cheaper for exactly that reason. They are not automatically a bad idea, but they are a decision to make deliberately, with insurance that covers weather disruption.
The corresponding dry season, roughly December through April, is the reliable window and priced accordingly. If your wedding falls in late summer or autumn, that is precisely when a delayed honeymoon starts to look attractive.
Seasons run the other way in parts of the world. Southeast Asia, the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean each have their own wet and dry patterns, which is why a September wedding does not have to mean a compromise — it usually means looking at a different hemisphere.
All-inclusive is the most common honeymoon format from Canada, and the quality range inside that label is enormous. What separates properties is usually food, whether restaurants are genuinely a la carte or buffet-with-extra-steps, and how much of the resort is reservation-only.
Adults-only is worth considering for a honeymoon and is not the same as luxury. It changes the noise level and the pool atmosphere far more than it changes the room. Couples who want quiet should filter for it explicitly rather than assuming a higher price delivers it.
At the higher end, overwater bungalows in the Maldives, Tahiti and parts of the South Pacific are the classic honeymoon image. They are a long way from Canada and priced accordingly, and are usually paired with a stopover rather than flown straight through.
A two-centre trip suits couples who do not want a week of the same thing: a few days somewhere active or cultural, then a few days at a beach. It costs more in transfers but tends to be the trip people talk about afterwards.
On a honeymoon the room category is usually the upgrade worth paying for, because unlike on a touring trip you spend real time in it. A swim-up, a genuine ocean view, or a quieter section of the property gets used every day.
Flights are where couples most often overspend without gaining anything, by booking a premium cabin on the outbound and then arriving too early to check in. Spending that money on the resort instead is generally the better trade unless the flight is very long.
Insurance matters more on a honeymoon than on an ordinary holiday, because the dates are fixed by a wedding and the deposits are larger. Cancellation and interruption coverage is the part to read carefully, particularly for travel inside hurricane season.
Book in the name shown on the passport you will actually travel on. Couples changing their name after the wedding should either travel on the existing passport or make sure the new one is in hand well before departure, since tickets must match exactly and corrections after issue are often not permitted.
Many destinations require passport validity beyond your return date, commonly six months, and some require an entry authorisation arranged in advance. Requirements change, so confirm current rules for your destination before booking non-refundable arrangements.
Peak honeymoon periods overlap with school holidays and the December to April dry season. For those windows, book early: the resorts couples actually want fill first, and the remaining availability is rarely the best value.

Roughly June through November, with the most active period from August into October. Fares and resort rates are lower then. It can be a reasonable trade if you go in knowing the risk and carry insurance that covers weather disruption.
That is when looking beyond the Caribbean pays off. Parts of Europe are still warm, and destinations in other hemispheres are in their own dry seasons. It is also a strong case for delaying the honeymoon into the December to April window.
Often, but for atmosphere rather than luxury. It mainly changes the noise level and the pool. If quiet matters to you, filter for it directly instead of assuming a higher price delivers it.
For most honeymoons, the room. You spend real time in it every day, whereas a premium cabin on a medium-haul flight buys a few hours. On very long-haul trips the calculation changes.
It matters more than on an ordinary holiday. The dates are fixed by a wedding and the deposits are larger, so cancellation and interruption coverage is the part to read closely, especially for travel during hurricane season.
For the December to April peak and anything overlapping school holidays, as early as you reasonably can. The properties couples actually want fill first, and late availability is rarely the best value.
